17th Treatment - October 2, 2008

Today was the beginning of my last cycle of Chemo. It was a long treatment that began with a doctor's appointment first. Travis came with me and we discussed with the doctor "what's next?". First, I have 3 more treatments left until I am done with the "icky" chemos. I then will be receiving Herceptin every third week, this drug targets a protein that my body produces called HER2. It goes and attaches itself to this protein and will hopefully help slow down another recurrence. Every fourth week I'll be given the drug Zometa which slows down bone complication where the cancer has metastasized to the bones. This will help strengthen L4 in my spine. I have been referred to a gynecologist oncologist, Karen Zempolich to schedule a laproscopic surgery to remove my ovaries sometime in November. This surgery will stop estrogen production which fuels my cancer. I then will be given Femara which will prevent any other estrogen production in my body. I will be given PET scans every three months and then be vigilant checking my body for any unusual pain or lumps.

Travis hung with me at chemo today and we just hung and ate lunch there. Following chemo I came home to the best welcome. Some kind friend decorated my door with pink ribbons and the nicest sign to remind me that October is breast cancer awareness and made a cute sign with a darling message. Thank you to whoever made this welcome home. It made my day. Last night was a blast because Travis, Garret and me went to the U of U football game where Utah barely beat Oregon State. It went down to the wire and the Utes won! Very exciting.

Jules, what a cute picture of you and hubby. What great memories of you and mom. My mom did canning but I would just eat and never stuck around to learn how to. I did a great peach cobbler this last week with my peaches from K's house. They were not as sweet as normal but it was yummy.

We are thinking of you. It sounds good that you'll still be getting some sort of chemos to fight a recurrence. You are all in our prayers.

Yeah! You're almost there. Dr. Z is an incredible surgeon. You're in good hands with her! I heard the U game was a nailbiter. I figured it out when Levi started screaming while he was in the basement by himself. Gotta love football season!

Thanks for sharing all the details of your cancer treatment. My father was just diagnosed with a ruccurance of prostate cancer and is working his way through radiation. His treatment is not as invasive as yours but it's nice to understand how the battle goes. By telling it like it is you make it not so scary to talk about.

Hi! I hope you don't mind me looking at your blog! My name is Becky Heiener, and I was one of Garrett's third grade teachers! I found your blog through Neena's. The title was so cute, and I just wanted to steal a peak. I was surprised to see familiar faces! I am so sorry to hear about your cancer! It is a terrible, ugly disease. I hope someday soon they find a cure. I was ecstatic to see Garrett getting his Eagle at such a young age! He is such a good kid! He was always so helpful and cooperative in our class. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck. Tell Garrett congrats from me and you and your family are in our prayers.
